41 VolkerStevin employees undertook and completed the JD Gyms City of Preston 10k run, all in aid of the Baby Beat Appeal. The route tested the runners’ endurance and agility, starting and finishing in the city centre, but taking in the steep hills at Avenham Park and an off-road track alongside the River Ribble.
Once the gauntlet had been laid down, the VolkerStevin runners wanted to put on a ‘good show’ – raising funds for, and the profile of the Baby Beat Appeal – a charity that delivers vital equipment needed for foetal monitoring. The teams formed a running club, which helped with their training, as well as encouraging and setting a good example for the overall good health and wellbeing of their colleagues and the business as a whole.
Every year VolkerStevin representatives select a local charity to support throughout the year and raise funds on behalf of, and 2018 was designated to the Baby Beat Appeal who help in the delivery of 4,600 babies per year. Fund raising has included events such as ‘dress down Fridays’, silent auctions, baking and raffles – all of which have raised £1,505.61 to date, on top of the £1,870 raised by the runners.
In addition, VolkerStevin are committed to ensuring that all their construction sites and offices have safety as a priority, and have pledged to donate 50p for every hazard card posted on site. A hazard card identifies any safety issues or hazards in the workplace and this campaign incentivises all employees to provide feedback and take ownership of their own health and safety performance. With 7,198 cards having been handed in to date this year, VolkerStevin staff have generated an additional £3,599 for the Baby Beat Appeal, which will be donated during the first quarter of 2019.
