Ensuring safety on construction sites goes beyond wearing helmets and high-visibility vests. The availability and knowledge of life-saving equipment, such as defibrillators and bleed kits, are critical components of workplace safety. In recognition of the World Day for Safety and Health at Work on April 28, 2024, Turtle Defib Cabinets is urging construction workers to familiarise themselves with the locations of their nearest defibrillators and bleed control kits, highlighting the importance of being prepared "just in case."
Bleed control kits are specialised trauma kits designed to provide bystanders with the necessary tools to stop life-threatening bleeding until emergency services arrive. Unlike standard first-aid kits, which are equipped to handle minor injuries such as cuts and burns, bleed kits are essential for managing severe bleeding caused by accidents involving machinery, vehicles, or even acts of violence.
A basic bleed kit, essential for high-risk environments like construction sites, typically includes trauma dressings to control moderate bleeding, haemostatic gauze dressings that stop life-threatening bleeding within 60 seconds, chest seals for managing penetrating chest wounds, tourniquets to stop catastrophic limb bleeding, nitrile gloves for personal protection, and scissors for cutting bandages and clothing. Conducting a workplace risk assessment can help determine the necessity of these specialised trauma kits.
Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) is a life-threatening condition that can affect anyone, regardless of age or fitness level. In such cases, the heart’s rhythm is disrupted, preventing it from effectively pumping blood. Every minute without defibrillation decreases the chance of survival by 7-10%, making immediate access to an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) crucial.
AEDs are user-friendly, portable devices that deliver an electrical shock to the heart, helping it to restore a normal rhythm. They can be used by anyone, regardless of training, and are vital in high-risk environments where medical assistance may be delayed. In the construction industry, where workers engage in physically demanding tasks, the presence of AEDs on-site can significantly increase the chances of survival during a cardiac emergency.
Despite the critical importance of AEDs and bleed kits, there is currently no legislation in the UK mandating their presence in workplaces. This gap in health and safety regulations underscores the need for businesses to proactively equip their sites with life-saving medical equipment. Turtle Defib Cabinets advocates for every construction site to have easily accessible AEDs and bleed kits, stressing that these resources can be the difference between life and death in emergencies.
Having AEDs and bleed kits available on construction sites not only protects workers but also contributes to the broader community's safety. Publicly accessible and registered defibrillators and bleed control kits can be a critical resource during medical emergencies, as a 999 operator can direct callers to the nearest equipment. This approach has been successfully implemented by GMI Construction in city centres, demonstrating its potential to save lives beyond the workplace.
Mike Dowson, Founder and Managing Director of Turtle Defib Cabinets, emphasises the importance of immediate action in emergencies: “We never think the worst will happen, but the figures are sobering; 30,000 people experience cardiac arrest each year, 60,645 employees were injured at work last year, and there were 48,716 knife-enabled crime offences in the year to September 2023. Then you look at the action and survival statistics and it’s clear that defibs and bleed control kits must be within reach in just a couple of minutes."
To mark the World Day for Safety and Health at Work, Turtle Defib Cabinets is urging all construction workers to ensure they know the locations of the nearest defibrillator and bleed control kit. Dowson adds, "If the lifesaving medical equipment can’t be accessed and brought back to their location quickly, I suggest they speak to their health and safety department. With a commitment from businesses to own the equipment and from employees to know the location, more lives can be saved.” In conclusion, the presence of defibrillators and bleed control kits on construction sites is not just a regulatory compliance issue but a moral imperative. By prioritising these life-saving tools, the construction industry can significantly enhance workplace safety and ensure that both workers and the broader community have access to critical medical care in emergencies.
