Simon Pengelly, one of the most celebrated contemporary British furniture designers, has collaborated with Merchant & Found to develop a series of contemporary tables launching 1 October.
As long-time design collaborators at some of Britain's most iconic interiors brands such as Habitat and The Conran Shop, Merchant & Found founder Paul Middlemiss set Simon Pengelly a brief to create ‘the perfect contemporary table for vintage furniture’ specifically from the 1920s – 1950s resulting in two initial designs - The Slice and The Frame dining tables.
The tables were designed by Simon and produced exclusively in Europe for Merchant & Found, one of the UK’s leading vintage furniture suppliers. Both are created in solid European oak, hand-finished throughout and come in various sizes – square and rectangular – with either solid oak, white laminate or white carrera marble tops.
Paul Middlemiss comments: “Vintage looks even better when it’s paired sympathetically with well-designed contemporary furniture. Simon designs beautifully proportioned, elegant and simple pieces with a timeless aesthetic that fits perfectly with our pieces, whether it’s a 1950s Baumann chair or a beautifully scarred Tolix chair from the 1940s. We have worked together on some of the most iconic pieces in British design history - usually with me as the buyer and Simon the designer. This is just the start of our exciting independent furniture journey together.”
Simon Pengelly, “Our collective passions revolve around saving and restoring beautifully made, well designed furniture. Making things has always been important to me. Understanding materials and the making processes is fundamental to my approach and links directly with a love of vintage pieces – both the Slice and Frame tables are designed to do Merchant & Found furniture justice and have equal longevity.”
The Frame table is made in Europe in solid European oak, hand-finished throughout with a subtle matt finish that brings out the grain. It is available in 2.2 metre and 2.8 metre lengths with prices starting at £1100.
The slice table is also made in Europe in solid European oak, hand-finished throughout with either a white laminate top (on a birch ply base) or with a white carrera marble top. The tables are available in various sizes both square and rectangular with 75cm/150cm rectangular being the most popular. Prices start at £390 for the 60cm square table.
