A South Gloucestershire assistant site manager has shared his experience in the industry ahead of National Apprenticeship Week.

Toby Lindley, aged 30, previously completed a Level 3 carpentry apprenticeship. Now as an assistant site manager, he is completing his degree apprenticeship at the popular Yate development, Ladden Garden Village, to become a site manager.

Sharing what inspired him to apply, Toby said: “Originally, I wanted to have a hands-on, practical job and learn the skills to become a carpenter. I knew early on that an office-based role wasn’t for me.”

Once Toby completed his first apprenticeship, his aspirations were set on progressing further with Barratt Bristol. He added: “Since moving through different roles, I have been inspired by seeing how the industry works and how the different departments interact with each other to complete a job.

“The most satisfying part of my job is watching the work come to completion and ensuring it is at the highest standard. Seeing customers move in and enjoy their new home and knowing I have contributed to their most prized possession is incredibly rewarding.”

Toby went on to lay out what a typical day as an assistant site manager looks like.

“Within my job role, my typical day requires me to work alongside experienced tradespeople and supervisors, lending my knowledge and practical skills to ensure the required jobs are completed on time and to a high standard.

“Each day offers a balance of hands-on learning, teamwork and professional development, helping me build both technical skills and confidence in a real working environment. Barratt supports my development through my job role as well as allocating a mentor, to reflect on how to further my progression.

“With Barratt being a large company, there are a lot of opportunities to advance your career if you have the right mindset. I’d encourage anyone considering a career in construction to apply – just make sure to pick a scheme depending on what you enjoy, as there are so many to choose from!

“Now, in five years, I see myself on my own site, as an experienced site manager – I can’t wait!”

Barratt Bristol, currently building Ladden Garden Village in Yate, has announced the opening of applications to its ongoing apprenticeship scheme, which will see successful candidates work at popular developments across the South West.

The apprenticeships will enable students with a passion for construction to develop their vocational skills and focus on different aspects of housebuilding, including bricklaying and carpentry. With a current shortage of construction and trade skills in the UK, Barratt Bristol has reinforced its commitment to investing in the workforce of the future.

Richard Lawson, Sales Director at Barratt Bristol, said: “As part of our commitment to developing and inspiring the next generation of housebuilders, we’re proud to offer apprenticeship opportunities across the South West for school leavers who aspire to build a career in construction.

“Our aim is to give motivated learners the chance to expand their industry knowledge and gain practical, hands-on experience, equipping them with the tools and support they need to succeed in their chosen field.

“At Barratt Bristol, we have welcomed 31 apprentices since 2014, who have graduated with the skills and confidence to pursue successful careers, and we hope to inspire hundreds more. For any school leaver considering an apprenticeship and eager to build a future in the industry, I would strongly encourage them to apply for our programme.”
