Homerton College Dining Hall Announced as Cambridge’s Best New Building

Mar 22, 2023

The University of Cambridge’s Homerton Dining Hall has been declared Cambridge’s best new building (over £2m construction cost) at the Greater Cambridge Design and Construction Awards.

The state-of-the-art hall also secured a joint win for the Craftmanship Award and a commendation in the David Mackay Engineering and Sustainability category, with judges praising its bold, environmentally conscious design.

Cambridge-based property and construction consultancy Ingleton Wood was appointed as Project Manager for the procurement of the building, which was completed in summer 2022.

Nick Bryant, Project Manager at Ingleton Wood, said: “We are delighted that Homerton Dining Hall has received such a glowing reception at the Greater Cambridge Design and Construction Awards. Homerton College has been a client of ours for many years, and these wins are testament to the strength of the team behind it.

“The hall has been designed and detailed robustly for a minimum 100-year lifespan, applying a set of sustainability standards that exceed best practice. It is all-electric and passively ventilated, featuring a ground source heat pump and sustainably sourced wood throughout the interior.”

Judges commented: “This stunning addition to Cambridge’s largest college provides a benchmark for what can be done through an ambitious multi-dimensional brief, a sympathetic and visionary architect, a deeply engaged client and a highly skilled construction/delivery team.”

Homerton's dining hall was designed by architects Feilden Fowles. The structural engineers were Structure Workshop and Barnes Construction turned the vision into reality.

Homerton's Vice-Principal and chair of the College's Estates Committee, Dr Francesca Moore, said: "The Hall is a triumph of thoughtful design. It's an all-electric building with low embodied carbon, designed with a low-tech architectural approach to meet the challenge of a rapidly warming planet.  We are immensely proud to have the building on the Homerton estate."

The Greater Cambridge Design and Construction Awards 2023 were hosted by the Greater Cambridge Shared Planning Service and the Cambridge Forum for the Construction Industry, with the awards ceremony taking place on 13 March.
