Plans to construct a new hydrogen production facility in Bradford have taken a significant step forward following government approval.
The project, a collaboration between N-Gen Energy Solutions and Hygen Energy, has been selected as one of ten schemes across the country to receive the green light as part of a wider push to expand the UK’s clean energy sector. The Bradford facility will focus on the production of low-carbon green hydrogen using renewable electricity, aimed at reducing emissions in heavy transport and industry.
Industry Minister Sarah Jones commented:
“Hydrogen will help us cut industrial emissions and support Britain’s industrial renewal by creating thousands of jobs in our industrial heartlands as part of the Plan for Change.”
The site, located on Bowling Back Lane, previously housed three large gas holders. Once operational, the plant will supply hydrogen for mobility uses, with major manufacturers such as JCB and Wrightbus identified as potential customers.
N-Gen managing director Gareth Mills said:
“We expect the facility to be a valuable addition to the Bradford economy, providing a viable way for local businesses to decarbonise, as well as attracting new companies and jobs to the area, by placing the city at the forefront of the transition to clean energy.”
Hygen Energy CEO Kevin Selleslags added:
“We are thrilled to reach the milestone of signing the low-carbon hydrogen agreement, which takes us a step closer to offering the region’s businesses and heavy transport the opportunity to decarbonise with cleaner, locally produced hydrogen at a competitive price. We’re excited to move to the next phase of building this trailblazing facility.”
This marks an important milestone for Yorkshire and the wider UK, positioning Bradford as a key player in the national transition toward sustainable, low-emission infrastructure.
