Future Generation, a joint venture between Southern Grove and Tadhamon Capital, has today announced a £13.85m deal with Kier to build its new student accommodation scheme in Colchester, Essex.

The deal is a significant addition to Kier Construction Eastern’s existing portfolio of private purpose-built student accommodation space and reinforces Future Generation’s market-leading position in attracting a tier one contractor for its design-led scheme.

Hythe Mills will include 223 student bedrooms with a mix of en-suite and studios in a riverfront building of part six, seven and eight storeys. The 7,300m2 scheme will be completed in August 2019 in time for the new academic year.

Designed by London based Architect Levitt Bernstein, Hythe Mills includes 460sqm of student union space together with bike storage, car parking and landscaping that connects to the River Colne in central Colchester. University of Essex students will also be among the first to benefit from a new exclusive partnership with Samsung that will see accommodation include Samsung Wi-Fi, digital appliances, TVs and air conditioning in each bedroom.

Andrew Southern, Chairman, Future Generation said: “Demand for high quality student accommodation in Colchester is growing as the University of Essex continues to stamp its mark with UK and European students. The University of Essex is currently on track to double in size by 2019 and was ranked in 2018 as one of the 40 best universities in Europe by the Times Higher Education and in 22nd place by the influential The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide.

“We are thrilled to partner with Kier for the first time. The Kier Construction Eastern team share the same vision as Future Generation for high quality, design led buildings and Hythe Mills will be best in class, transforming a brownfield site that has been empty for many years.”

Ian Gifford, Operations Director at Kier Construction Eastern said: “We are excited to be working with Future Generation alongside Andrew and his team to bring forward Hythe Mills. The scheme will provide high quality student accommodation in Essex and significantly improve the view along the river frontage.”

Hythe Mills will complete in August 2019 as will Future Generation’s Steel City student scheme in Sheffield. Steel City will offer students at the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University a mix of 324 en suite rooms, studios, and one and two bed apartments, and a roof-top networking hub.

Future Generation is a Joint Venture between Southern Grove and Tadhamon Capital focused on enhancing the student experience by changing the way students live and interact with each other. Its student accommodation schemes are architectural-led offering a mix of bed space and public areas that include sky lounges, on-roof sports facilities and platforms for networking. They have selected a group of key university towns and cities to roll out 10,000 beds across 25 sites over the next five years with a current secured pipeline of 3500 beds throughout the UK.
