Affordable Food Stoke, a foodbank and community centre in Stoke-on-Trent, has recently received a £1,500 donation from leading housebuilder Barratt Homes.
Affordable Food Stoke opened in 2017 to reduce food waste and help feed the local community. It became a registered charity in June 2021 and operates Tuesday to Saturday to feed those in need and bring the community together with a lounge and community café.
The donation from Barratt Homes, based nearby at its Waterside development, will go towards directly restocking the foodbank, emergency food parcels and the social supermarket, No. 87. As the cost of food and produce rises in the UK, it had become more difficult and expensive to keep the foodbank stocked.
Barratt Homes’ donation was made as part of the Barratt Developments Plc Charitable Foundation, which is designed to support national and local charities, large and small, across the UK to leave a legacy in the communities in which the housebuilder operates.
Duane Barrett, Co-Founder of Affordable Food Stoke, said: “Without donations from brilliant companies such as Barratt Homes, we simply would not be able to do what we do. The donation is not just supporting us, it is actually directly supporting the struggling families and we hope you feel a sense of pride for doing that because it underpins everything we do.
“In the UK right now, there are double the number of foodbanks as there are McDonalds, and more and more families are reaching that point where they need help. We help and support hundreds of families each week and the fact you have chosen to support us really does mean the world. We are so grateful.”
Rhys Nicholson, Managing Director at Barratt Homes Manchester, said: “As a leading homebuilder, we find it so important to give back to the local communities and it is the reason behind our Community Fund.
“To be able to see the direct impact these donations have on the community is very rewarding and we are proud to help Affordable Food Stoke feed those in need.”
