To celebrate National Apprenticeship Week (10th-16th February), one housebuilder is championing the scheme which has enabled burgeoning talent to join the team. As one group of apprentices complete their first year with Davidsons Homes, the next is joining the growing ranks.
After spending their first year on site with Leicestershire-based developer Davidsons Homes, Josh, Harry, Freddie and Ellis have now begun the second year of their apprenticeships in their chosen departments.
The company has welcomed Ahnya, Dillon and Ben, who have all started the first year of their apprenticeships, beginning with a year spent out onsite at one of Davidsons Homes’ developments, learning all about the construction industry and the differences that set the housebuilder apart.
Ahnya Cameron is one of the apprentices who joined the housebuilder in September 2024, beginning her BTEC course as a Construction Support Technician.
Birmingham-based Ahnya said: “I’ve always been interested in houses, so I was particularly looking for a job in the property industry when I saw that Davidsons has an apprenticeship programme.
“I’ll spend this first year working onsite at Sunloch Meadows in Burbage, which will give me a really good grounding in the industry and help me to understand the actual mechanics of building a home. Then I’ll spend a year rotating through the various departments in Head Office, seeing where I feel most at home and enjoy working the most. I feel quite open-minded about where I want to end up, I will see what I love to do and focus on that.
“Every day at Davidsons is different and I’m really enjoying learning the basics of construction out onsite. I’m sure that this way of doing things is going to give me a strong grounding in the industry and help me to understand how everything fits together.
“Davidsons is a family-run business and you can really feel that welcoming attitude within the team. There are lots of nice touches, like inviting all the staff to look around showhomes once they’ve been finished, which helps all the team to feel part of the process and connected to the homes we sell.”
Freddie Oxspring, from Melbourne in Derbyshire, said: “My dad has worked alongside Davidsons Homes for years, and has always said that you can tell when you’re on a Davidsons site because of the quality of the homes being built – and it’s something which has stuck in my head. When I was thinking about what career I wanted to go into, the construction industry felt like a natural choice. Lots of my family members work in the business, so I knew that there were lots of great opportunities and financially it made sense too.
“For me, the idea of working and getting paid while learning was just brilliant. I’ve been treated so well here and everyone is really friendly. The opportunities at Davidsons have really been great too. For instance, I attended a conference in the Houses of Parliament with Fran Beet and other Davidsons’ employees which is still something I can’t believe happened! We also got the chance to experience a day with former England and Three Lions rugby player Tom Croft, who toured us around the Leicester Tigers stadium and discussed his past, while giving us lots of career advice and help.”
