Balfour Beatty Living Places Managing Director, Steve Helliwell, is featured in Highways Magazinediscussing how a close collaborative relationship between Balfour Beatty Living Places and Southampton City Council resulted in the reconstruction of Millbrook Roundabout three weeks ahead of schedule, with minimal disruption to local communities and the travelling public.
Millbrook Roundabout, located at the entrance to the Port of Southampton’s Dock Gate 20, represents the leading vehicle handling port, and second largest container port, in the UK. With 36,000 vehicles and 3,000 lorries traveling through the area daily, Millbrook Roundabout is a key route for both the regional and UK economies.
Steve discusses how, through a process of early contractor involvement, close collaboration between client and contractor and an expert local supply chain, Balfour Beatty Living Places was able to closely plan traffic management in order to minimise disruption to the local community and travelling public.
In doing so, the fully reconstructed Millbrook Roundabout was opened three weeks ahead of schedule and to budget.
Speaking of his experience, Steve said: “By bringing together multiple, expert supply chain partners, all working together as one delivery team, we have delivered a tailored solution which achieved positive outcomes for Southampton City Council and the wider region.”
Jacqui Rayment, Cabinet Member for Transport and Place at Southampton City Council, said: “I can’t overstate just how important the success of this project was to Southampton, for our residents, commuters, visitors, businesses and the port.
“This was a much-needed and complete reconstruction of one of the busiest and most strategically important parts of the road network in the region.
“The fact that it was carried out so smoothly and without incident is testament to the hard work of all the teams involved on behalf of the partnership, both for Balfour Beatty Living Places and at Southampton City Council. We are working together to secure a sustainable and successful future for the city.”
