Housebuilder’s Armed Forces Programme Empowers Veterans For A Bright Future In Cheshire

A trainee assistant site manager in Cheshire is building a path to success within the construction industry since joining David Wilson Homes through its Armed Forces Transition Programme.

In recognition of Armed Forces Day (24^th June), the leading developer has highlighted its initiative that offers ex-servicepeople a valuable opportunity to transition into the construction industry and advance their careers.

Through the scheme, participants receive comprehensive experience, training, and unwavering support to embark on a rewarding path in site management.

Ashley Harding (34), who works on David Wilson Homes’ Kingsbourne development in Nantwich, supports the on-site team by co-ordinating the trades and making sure the site is operating within health and safety regulations and to the correct specification.

Since joining the developer in September 2022, Ashley has been enjoying all of the perks that the industry has to offer after developing valuable skills through the programme, which helps to ensure bright and promising futures for those making the transition.

For Armed Forces Day, Ashley has highlighted how the scheme can facilitate a smooth transition for those seeking a fulfilling career beyond their military service.

He said: “The transition programme has been brilliant for me. It can be a daunting prospect, leaving the military, but this provided me with a safety blanket and it’s great to know there are companies out there that support members of the Armed Forces.

“I’ve noticed a lot of crossovers between my role with David Wilson Homes and my career in the military. I’ve found it to be quite reactive and there’s a lot of problem solving involved, which I like.

“It’s been great to see a project through to the end. Starting from the foundations of a property, to ensuring it meets the industry standard and seeing a customer happy in their brand new home is very rewarding.”

Ashley joined the Army in January 2006 and was a Recovery Mechanic in the Corps of the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME).

He spent 16 years in the Forces, having reached the rank of Sergeant and spent most of his military career based at 3 Commando Brigade in Devon.

When asked what advice he would give to others hoping to join the construction industry, Ashley said: “At the resettlement period, I think it’s important to identify a route into a new career from the beginning. Keep an open mind at the start, but narrow the search down to an industry that particularly interests you.
