Horsham-based Sigma Homes has commenced construction at its £16m Sumners Fields development in the highly desirable village of Barns Green, West Sussex. The 4.7-acre (1.9Ha) brownfield site will see 32 family homes built.

Located off Chapel Road, the new scheme is surrounded by expanses of countryside and within easy reach of amenities. Planning permission was granted by Horsham District Council for a mix of one and two-bedroom apartments and two to four-bedroom houses. 12 of the properties will be allocated for affordable housing, providing an above policy of 37.5% allocation.

The homes are designed by Worthing-based ECE Architecture, and will all be built to a high EPC B rating. Construction is due to be completed early next year.

Geoff Potton, Chief Executive of Sigma Homes, said: “We are thrilled to start construction on this site in Barns Green, particularly due to the prime location and beautiful setting. The overall development will enhance the local area as well as provide much-needed energy-efficient family homes to this area of West Sussex.

“As with all our developments, this scheme will be constructed utilising timber-frame technology and a range of other green features including grey water recycling, to enable residents to significantly reduce their carbon footprint and energy bills. This mix of open market and affordable homes – suitable for first time buyers, families, and downsizers – will help to meet local housing demand.”

Barns Green benefits from several local amenities including a post office, primary school, village hall, post office and sports club. Nearby villages and the historic market town of Horsham are accessible by public transport. The nearest train station, Christs Hospital, runs frequent services to London Victoria in under 70 minutes, as well as a service to Gatwick Airport in just 35 minutes.

Sigma Homes’ new development will follow a conventional yet modern style, to complement the variety of architecture found locally in the village. The material palette has been inspired by existing nearby properties, which include a combination of red brick and white painted window frames, timber-cladded rural homes with dark window frames, and more contemporary post-war dwellings.

Public open space and ecological enhancements will be created, as well as retaining most of the existing trees and hedgerows on the site.

Sufficient parking will be provided for each home, as well as cycle storage. Electric Vehicle charging points will be provided to all houses with a garage and driveway, with further charging points allocated to the apartments.  To register for pre-launch information for homes at Sumners Fields, please visit https://sigmahomesgroup.co.uk/developments/west-sussex/sumners-fields
