London, 16 January 2024 - As part of a Cambodian delegation present in Paris for the France-Cambodia Business Forum led by HE HUN Manet, Prime Minister of Cambodia, Overseas Cambodian Investment Corporation (OCIC) and CAIC (Cambodia Airport Investment Corporation) teams were invited by Fosters+Partners to visit the architecture firm. The famous British architectural firm designed the new Techo Takhmao International Airport, the 9th largest airport in the world.
Scheduled for 2025, this major infrastructure project represents a significant milestone in improving Cambodia's connectivity with the rest of the world and will become its new gateway to the rest of the world. The new airport covers an area of 2,600 hectares about 20 km from the city centre of Phnom Penh. It is the 9th largest airport in the world and is class 4F, the highest class for airports. The first phase of the airport will be able to handle up to 13 million passengers a year.
The investment of OCIC illustrates its commitment to the development of essential infrastructure for the country.
Renowned British architects Foster+Partners were chosen by CAIC for their modern and innovative vision, which is reflected in their many projects around the world. (eg. International airport of Hong-Kong, Trafalgar Square, Wembley Stadium, many Apple Store in London and in the World, etc.)
To design the Airport, Foster+Partners was inspired by the rich heritage and history of Cambodia and imagined it as contemporary representation of Cambodian culture. The aim was to offer to passengers highest quality experience and setting new standards in sustainable development Foster + Partners designed a state-of-the-art airport providing passengers with a top-tier experience while establishing new standards in sustainable development. For example, the central terminal will be mainly powered by electricity from a photovoltaic farm near to the airport. There is a strong desire to be one of the greenest airports in the world
« The opening of Techo Takhmao International Airport is a crucial event for Cambodia, not only in terms of infrastructure but also for its economic and tourism impact.
