Energy expert Gordon Wallis at Your NRG shares his top tips on how households can cut the cost of both energy and water bills with these simple changes.
“About 20% of a home's heating bill comes from heated water. By managing your water use better, you can lower water bills and reduce energy costs all at once.”
Shower Changes
"As energy bills are set to surge, it's important for households to manage their bills. One way to do this is the 'navy shower' technique. This limits your hot shower time to three minutes, and can actually save up to £80 a year!
“You can also make your shower more efficient with an aerated shower head. This mixes your shower water with air to reduce the volume, potentially saving up to £75 every year alone! Even more for homes with water metres.”
Laundry list
“Dishwashers and washing machines are also famously demanding appliances that ask a lot of our boilers. Fortunately, there are plenty of energy-saving options here, too.
“We all know at this point that washing laundry at lower temperatures goes a long way to saving money on bills, but it’s worth reiterating.
“Between 30 and 40 degrees celsius is more than enough for most weekly laundry loads, and doesn’t strain the wallet too much.”
Keep an eye on your usage
“For ultimate efficiency over your water heater, consider keeping it off whilst it’s not in use. This will make sure you know exactly how much you’re using at any given time, especially helpful for those on lower budgets.
“Similarly, keep an eye on your home’s heating system if you have access to it. Fixing leaks and insulating water pipes will conserve water, prevent heat loss, and optimise your energy use.
"Efficient water use is a key strategy to trim energy costs. Monitoring water consumption through tools like smart metres provides valuable insights to identify areas for savings and enhance overall efficiency, potentially saving households up to £36.93 per year on gas and electricity. “Another well-worn piece of advice worth reiterating is investing in a smart metre. These let households in on very specific and accurate details about their energy usage, so you can save and optimise where it’s needed most.
