As digital connectivity becomes increasingly central to everyday life across the UK, the infrastructure supporting mobile communications networks is facing growing operational pressure. Rising mobile data usage, continued 5G rollout and increasing dependence on reliable digital services are all driving greater demand for resilient telecommunications infrastructure nationwide. 

At the centre of that network is Cornerstone, one of the UK’s largest mobile infrastructure providers, which manages a substantial portfolio of telecommunications sites supporting mobile network operators across the country. The business has now strengthened its long-term maintenance capability through a major new framework agreement with United Infrastructure, reinforcing Cornerstone’s continued focus on resilience, safety and operational performance across its national estate. 

Under the framework, United Infrastructure will provide planned preventative maintenance and reactive repair services across more than 16,000 telecoms sites throughout the UK, including locations in Northern Ireland and the Scottish Highlands and Islands. The agreement is due to commence in May 2026 and forms part of Cornerstone’s wider infrastructure maintenance strategy. 

The scale of the framework reflects the increasing operational demands facing telecoms infrastructure providers as digital connectivity continues evolving throughout the UK. Research from Ofcom indicates that mobile data consumption continues rising significantly year-on-year, driven by streaming services, cloud-based systems, remote working and increasing digitalisation across both public and private sectors. At the same time, ongoing investment in 5G infrastructure is increasing the need for reliable site maintenance and long-term asset resilience across telecoms networks nationwide. 

For infrastructure operators, maintaining network performance is no longer simply an operational consideration. Reliable connectivity now underpins everything from business operations and transport systems through to emergency communications and public services.

The agreement also highlights the increasing importance of specialist engineering and maintenance providers within the telecoms sector, where infrastructure estates often span remote rural locations, urban environments and difficult-access sites requiring significant operational coordination and strict safety procedures. United Infrastructure has continued expanding its presence across utilities, telecoms and critical infrastructure sectors, delivering engineering and maintenance services designed to support long-term asset performance and operational continuity. 

Under the framework, the company will work alongside Cornerstone to support maintenance delivery, reporting visibility and infrastructure performance management across the telecoms estate. Scott MacGregor, Managing Director of Connected at United Infrastructure, stated: “We are extremely proud to have been selected by Cornerstone as their sole partner for this UK-wide maintenance programme. Importantly, the partnership will also support workforce development through the creation of apprenticeship opportunities across both field-based and office-based roles. That investment reflects wider skills challenges facing infrastructure and engineering sectors throughout the UK, where demand for specialist technical capability continues increasing. 

The agreement also demonstrates the increasingly interconnected relationship between digital infrastructure and physical engineering delivery. While mobile connectivity is often associated with technology platforms and digital services, the physical infrastructure supporting those systems remains heavily dependent on maintenance capability, engineering expertise and long-term operational planning. 

Government policy continues to identify digital infrastructure as a major driver of economic growth and productivity, with reliable nationwide connectivity increasingly viewed as essential national infrastructure alongside transport, utilities and energy systems. Against that backdrop, Cornerstone’s latest framework agreement reflects the growing importance of resilient telecoms infrastructure and the long-term engineering partnerships required to support the future of UK connectivity.
