Balfour Beatty today announces that it has been awarded a £121 million, four-year contract by National Grid to deliver the Bramford 400kV substation extension project in Suffolk, England, as part of the Bramford to Twinstead project.

The contract has been awarded through National Grid’s EPC Framework and forms a critical part of the Great Grid Upgrade.

Balfour Beatty will be responsible for the design and installation of the substation extension, which will facilitate the connection of four new circuits, including two new grid supply points, and two new shunt reactors to improve the reliability and efficiency of the network.

In addition, the business will integrate new gantry structures to support overhead line connections, as well as design, supply and install critical systems to monitor, control and safeguard the network.

On completion, the project will support the transition to a low carbon energy system by increasing transmission capacity and resilience across the East Anglia electricity network.

Work has already commenced with completion expected in 2030. At peak, Balfour Beatty will employ approximately c.150 people across the project, including a number of apprentice and graduate positions.
