Balfour Beatty has featured twice in this month's Early Careers edition of New Civil Engineer highlighting both the benefits of hiring young professionals and exploring what the industry needs to focus on from an apprentice's point of view.

In the first piece, Ryan Mayor, Balfour Beatty Early Careers Manager, highlights how the company has put in place a supportive culture for early careers professionals to achieve long term success, integrating them into the business through combined induction events that help connect them with each other as well as bringing together allies through Balfour Beatty's Affinity Networks.

“Culture eats strategy alive” explains Ryan. “It is in our DNA to hire young people. We have been helping get people started for decades and there are people at the top of the businesses who started that way with us.”

Nusayba Abaas, one of Balfour Beatty's Civil Engineer Apprentices, has also featured, discussing what - in her view - the industry needs to focus on moving forward, including the adoption of new technologies, such as AI.

Speaking about AI, Nusayba says: "For example, with AI, you can't just go straight to ChatGPT and give it all the information that your company has. A more careful approach is needed, despite the appetite for adoption of AI technologies."

Balfour Beatty is committed to attracting the next generation of talent, with 7.4% of the company’s UK workforce made up of Apprentices, Graduates, Trainees and Sponsored Students as part of its membership of The 5% Club -  a dynamic movement of employers committed to providing ‘Earn & Learn’ positions.
