Kent-based homebuilder Millwood Designer Homes has raised an incredible £6,855 for the Royal British Legion Industries in recent weeks. Supporting army veterans across the UK, Millwood’s Managing Director Nick Stonley and Site Manager Clive Turner undertook their own personal challenges to raise crucial funds for this worthy cause.
The Royal British Legion Industries is a fantastic organisation that has provided crucial accommodation, welfare, and employment support to injured veterans, ex-servicemen/women with disabilities, and homeless veterans since 1919. The life-changing work of the RBLI helps ex-service personnel to lead more independent lives by providing accommodation, access to mental health support through an on-site welfare team, counselling and career guidance, which has made a real difference to countless individuals for over a century.
Currently, there are 6,000 homeless veterans that find themselves without a home, and desperately fending for themselves on the streets up and down the country. With two purpose-built housing developments designed for homeless veterans and their families, the communities at the RBLI’s Veteran and Centenary Villages are safe spaces that offer care and support to those who need it most. Fundraising support for the RBLI is needed now more than ever, with the charity’s hope that one day, every ex-serviceman will have access to a safe place to stay, and much-needed mental health guidance.
In March, Millwood’s Managing Director Nick Stonley participated in the RBLI’s Great Tommy Sleep Out, braving a wet and windy night under a makeshift shelter in Fort Amherst in aid of the charity. Whilst the challenge certainly does not replicate homelessness, the experience gives an idea of the conditions faced by far too many veterans across the country. This year, 13,456 participants from across the country came together as a unified #TeamTommy, to raise money for this worthy cause.
Nick Stonley, Managing Director at Millwood Designer Homes, comments: “I would like to say a big thank you to all those who sponsored me at the RBLI’s Great Tommy Sleepout. I am delighted to have raised £5,655 for the RBLI to help veterans in need. These funds will help the 6,000 veterans in the UK a safe place to stay, career and mental health support that they deserve. There is still time to add to this brilliant total, and every contribution is greatly appreciated.”
In addition to Nick’s fantastic fundraising efforts, Millwood Site Manager Clive Turner successfully ran the London Marathon on Sunday 23rd April in aid of the RBLI, following months of intensive training. Taking part in the testing 26.2 mile route through London, Clive raised an impressive total of £1,200 for the RBLI, completing the marathon in an incredible 4 hours and 21 minutes.
