Buying New Could Save Homebuyers Thousands Each Year

Figures released this week by the HBF (Home Builders Federation) show that buyers who choose a new build house could now save up to £3100 on average energy costs annually – up from £2600 last year.

The savings have been highlighted in time for New Homes Week (27th Feb – 3rd March), when a special focus is being held on the value of affordable ownership schemes on Tuesday 28th February. It’s welcome news to shared ownership provider St Arthur Homes, which has long heralded the long-term value of buying new.

Richard Cohen, CEO of St Arthur Homes, said: “New Homes Week is the perfect time to celebrate the great things about buying new – and foremost among those reasons is the energy efficiency of these homes, saving you thousands in the medium to long term.

“In fact, 85 per cent of newbuilds have an A or B EPC rating, compared to just four per cent of older properties achieving the same grade. Not only that but upgrading an old home to modern standards could cost more than £70,000, not to mention the stress and hassle of living through renovations and building work.

“And of course, it’s not just money we can be saving, but the planet too. Many of us are taking steps towards living in a more sustainable way, and one of the best things any of us can do when it comes to meeting those concerns, is to go for a new build home, rather than an older property.

“New build homes emit a third of the carbon of an older property, reducing carbon emissions by over 500,000 tonnes. Buying new is one way that we can drastically cut our personal carbon emissions, with the added benefit of saving money too.”
