Peter Culley of Spatial Affairs Bureau has been shortlisted in the World Architecture News in the Rising Star/Emerging Practice of the Year category.

Spatial Affairs works across large scale commercial projects through to creative and domestic projects. Culley himself has particular interest in projects that relate to a culture practice, having worked with museums, culturally driven commercial organizations, artists and art initiatives including:

  • The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York
  • TBWA\Chiat\Day Los Angeles
  • Crosstown Arts, Memphis
  • Richmond Bridge Park, Virginia
  • Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs.

Spatial Affairs is also recognized for its expertise in sustainable heritage conservation and adaptive reuse, from the internationally recognised Crosstown Arts within the Crosstown Concourse, a massive former Sears warehouse in Memphis redesigned and repurposed to house a contemporary arts centre and artist residency programme, performance spaces, a school, offices, outpatient health facilities, grocery shops, restaurants and 250 residences, through to historical domestic projects in and around Los Angeles, with an emphasis on light and environmentally negative footprints.

Most recently Culley has created an stunning work/live 5,400-square-foot compound for renowned contemporary artist Rana Begum in London. The scheme takes its cues from the vast wooded area of Abney Park Cemetery that it looks onto and features Culley’s subtle negotiations of space, light and landscape in a complex negotiation of twelve neighbouring boundaries around this landlocked site.

Culley’s previously worked with Rick Mather Architects, where, as project director he oversaw the $200m Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and campus landscape expansion, and London’s South Bank Centre 30-acre masterplan and Kathryn Gustafson.

The winners in the 2020 WAN Awards will be announced online from the17th to the19th November 2020.
