Mobile network giant, O2, has announced its plans to become a Net Zero Business by 2025.

In what it claimed to be the “fastest and furthest reaching carbon reduction programme”, the company has set itself the target of cutting carbon output across its entire business by 100% within the next five years; including a 30% reduction of emissions from their supply chain partners.

The company’s CEO, Mark Evans, said: “We want to go further and faster, setting the bar in our industry to tackle climate change and build the greenest network for our customers. Every office, every store, every mast.”

To this end, O2 aims to ensure all services on its customers’ phones are driven by green energy within the next five years.

On top of this, any third-party landlords that support the O2 network will be switched over to renewable energy supplies.

This continues their previous energy consumption efforts such as the UK Smart Metering Programme set up to reduce 23 million household emissions across the country by 25% by 2035.

O2 was also the first to introduce energy-saving technology on their data carriers that automatically adjusts electrical output on its 3G, 4G, and 5G networks based on demand.

Evans added: “Mobile can play a pivotal role to make our country more sustainable. O2 will work with suppliers, partners and customers to ensure that this industry plays its part in delivering a greener country for us all.”The network, alongside its subsidiaries like giffgaff and Tesco Mobile, reached 33 million customers during 2019, is one of the largest UK mobile networks, and is one of only three companies worldwide to hold the Carbon Trust Standard for Supply Chain at the highest level.
