The practical completion of the £17.8 million Bridgwater Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC) represents a significant step in the ongoing transformation of healthcare infrastructure across Somerset. Designed to improve access to diagnostic services and bring advanced imaging closer to local communities, the new facility will increase capacity for MRI, CT, ultrasound and outpatient services, helping to reduce waiting times whilst easing pressure on acute hospitals. Achieved in June 2026 following an accelerated construction programme, the project also demonstrates how modern methods of construction can support the rapid delivery of complex healthcare facilities without compromising quality.
The centre was delivered through a long-term Managed Service partnership between Ergéa UK and Somerset NHS Foundation Trust, with Actiform serving as the principal construction partner. By combining infrastructure delivery, diagnostic equipment installation and modern construction techniques within a coordinated programme, the project progressed from site works in late 2025 to practical completion on 12 June 2026. This integrated approach demonstrates the value of close collaboration across the healthcare and construction sectors in delivering complex facilities efficiently and to a high standard.
Demand for diagnostic services continues to grow across the UK. Research from NHS England indicates that Community Diagnostic Centres are helping to reduce waiting times by providing patients with faster access to tests closer to home, whilst easing pressure on busy acute hospital sites. The Bridgwater facility has been designed to support this ambition by housing two MRI scanners, two CT scanners, four outpatient consultation rooms and two echocardiography and ultrasound suites, creating additional local capacity for both routine and specialist investigations.
The pace of delivery has been one of the project's defining achievements. Throughmodern methods of construction, the building works were completed between January and March 2026, allowing diagnostic equipment to be installed by early April before commissioning and final preparations. Rather than following a traditional sequential programme, key elements of the construction progressed simultaneously, significantly reducing the overall build time while maintaining the stringent standards required within a healthcare environment.
Stefan Dransfield, Managing Director of Actiform Limited, explained: "Modern Methods of Construction has enabled this essential medical facility to be constructed at pace and deliver a first-class Community Diagnostic Centre without compromise. Traditional construction methods are very linear in their nature, which makes them highly sensitive to the critical path. Modern Methods of Construction allows key works to proceed in parallel, meaning the building envelope can be completed within days rather than weeks or months. The result is a much shorter journey from conception to delivering medical services, without compromising standards, finishes or building performance."
The collaborative nature of the project extended beyond construction. Ergéa UK's Managed Equipment Services model brought together infrastructure delivery, medical technology procurement, equipment installation and long-term lifecycle management within a single coordinated programme. This integrated approach helped streamline delivery whilst ensuring the facility was fully prepared for clinical activation following practical completion.
David Craig, CDC Programme Director at Somerset NHS Foundation Trust, reflected on the wider significance of the project, noting: "Delivering a project of this scale on budget and at record speed is a remarkable achievement and reflects the dedication of everyone involved. This milestone also marks the successful conclusion of Somerset's Diagnostic Transformation Programme. Through the programme, we have delivered an additional 877,608 diagnostic tests for the population of Somerset."
Research from NHS England highlights that earlier diagnosis is fundamental to improving patient outcomes, particularly for conditions such as cancer and cardiovascular disease where timely intervention can have a significant impact. By bringing advanced diagnostic services closer to local communities, Community Diagnostic Centres improve accessibility, reduce unnecessary travel for patients and strengthen the resilience of the wider healthcare system.
The Bridgwater Community Diagnostic Centre demonstrates how modern construction, integrated project delivery and strong collaboration can accelerate the delivery of vital healthcare infrastructure while maintaining the highest standards of quality.
As the facility prepares to welcome its first patients later this year, the Bridgwater Community Diagnostic Centre provides an example of how innovation and collaboration can successfully address growing pressures on healthcare infrastructure. For the construction industry, it illustrates the potential of modern methods of construction to deliver technically complex healthcare projects at speed, whilst ensuring the buildings are equipped to meet the evolving needs of patients, clinicians and local communities.
