Design & Build UK is proud to support the launch of a new Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in Construction online assured course, developed in collaboration with NOCN Group and Women in Construction. This initiative reflects a shared commitment to strengthening the industry through more inclusive practices, ensuring that construction can better respond to the needs of a modern and diverse workforce while maintaining high standards of professionalism and collaboration.
The construction sector continues to face well-documented challenges in relation to diversity and representation. Research from the Office for National Statistics indicates that women make up approximately 15% of the UK construction workforce, highlighting a significant imbalance that limits both opportunity and innovation. As the industry evolves to meet increasing demand, it is essential that organisations adopt inclusive approaches that attract and retain a broader range of talent. This course has been designed to address these challenges directly by equipping learners with the knowledge and confidence required to foster meaningful cultural change across workplaces.
The programme consists of six structured sessions, each lasting approximately 30 minutes, and is accessible across a range of digital devices to ensure flexibility for learners. It incorporates interactive learning techniques, practical activities and opportunities for reflection, allowing participants to engage with complex topics in a way that is both accessible and relevant to real working environments. By focusing on practical application alongside theoretical understanding, the course supports individuals at all stages of their careers, from those entering the industry to experienced professionals seeking to enhance their leadership approach.
Participants will develop a clear understanding of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion within a construction context, including the terminology, behaviours and sector-specific challenges that shape workplace experiences. The course also explores the legal framework surrounding discrimination, alongside the role of unconscious bias in decision-making and the importance of mental health and wellbeing in creating supportive environments. Data from McKinsey & Company shows that organisations with diverse teams are 36% more likely to outperform their peers, reinforcing the importance of inclusive practices not only as a moral imperative but as a driver of performance and long-term sustainability.
The course has been developed to provide tangible benefits for both individuals and organisations, supporting improved communication, stronger team cohesion and safer working environments. For employers, the ability to embed inclusive practices is increasingly linked to staff retention and productivity, particularly in an industry facing ongoing skills shortages. By offering practical tools and clear guidance, this programme enables businesses to move beyond policy and towards meaningful, everyday behaviours that shape workplace culture.
Design & Build UK emphasises the importance of collaboration in driving sector-wide change. A representative from the organisation stated: “Creating a more inclusive construction industry requires consistent action and a willingness to challenge established practices. This course provides a structured and practical framework that enables individuals and organisations to understand inclusion in context and apply it effectively within their own environments.” This perspective highlights the organisation’s commitment to ensuring that Equality, Diversity and Inclusion are embedded at every level of the industry rather than treated as a separate initiative.
Michaela Wain, Managing Director of Women in Construction, further reinforced the importance of this work, noting: “Construction has enormous potential, but we can only unlock it fully when everyone feels they have a place and a voice. This course is an important step in helping the industry understand what inclusion really looks like in practice and how it can be sustained over time.” Her comments underline the role of education in shaping behaviours and supporting long-term cultural change across the sector.
The course is available now and has been designed with accessibility and scalability in mind, with the potential to develop into a Level 2 qualification in the future. Upon completion, learners will receive an NOCN Assured Course Certificate, recognising their commitment to professional development and inclusive practice. Through this collaborative initiative, Design & Build UK continues to support a construction sector that reflects the communities it serves, promotes equal opportunity and is equipped to meet the challenges of the future.
