National Highways Signs Contract With Skanska To Carry Out The A46 Improvement Scheme

Leading project development, and construction company, Skanska have signed a contract with Network Rail to undertake the design and construction of the widening the A46.

Connecting the M1, Leicester and central Lincolnshire, the A46 Newmark Bypass is an important route, it is that important, it is identified as a strategically important scheme in the government’s road investment strategy. The entire scheme is expected to cost around £400-500m.

The multinational construction and development company, Skanska have officially signed a contract with Network Rail to carry out a number of work. They are expected to undertake the design and construction of widening the A46 to a dual carriageway, providing motorists two lanes in each direction between the Farndon and Winthorpe junctions.

The work carried out will also include a new bridge to take traffic over the A1, and a flyover installed at Cattle Market and also the creation of a new five-arm roundabout, at Winthorpe and traffic lights at the near junction for Farndon to improve traffic flows during peak hours.

This work is also expected to boost productivity and economic growth through providing a more reliable and resilient road network, as well as improve capacity to address traffic congestion on the A46 and provide better links to the M1 and A1.

This will help us to identify opportunities to optimise productivity, reduce cost and carbon emissions and deliver the project safely – while leaving a positive legacy for the local community.”
